Habitat for Hummingbirds
Habitat for Hummingbirds is dedicated to the well being of Hummingbirds. By investing in a habitat, you are not only treating yourself to a beautiful decorative ornament for your deck or lawn, you are creating a nurturing, loving environment for Hummingbirds to thrive and grow. For every habitat sold, $1 is given to the American Bird Conservancy in support of sustaining bird habitats.
Have you ever wished you were a bird? There is something about the freedom, weightlessness, and ability to soar to great heights which appeals to those of us bound by gravity. Birds, like humans, posses a natural inclination to create a permanent nest, uniquely their own, to come home to after a long winter and to pass on to their offspring. By observing these flirty little bird’s habits, we have incorporated every ingredient necessary for their well being into these one-of-a-kind habitats.
Wood is packed off Three Sisters Mountain Range near Bend, Oregon. The fronts and sides of our habitats are designed to give the appearance a flying owl which acts as a deterrent to larger predatory birds. Our Cedar decks keep out mites. Parent birds harvest lichen moss as nesting material for their little ones as it provides insulation in both hot and cold weather and acts as camouflage. Lichen moss is gathered from high in Oregon’s Cascade Mountain Range. Hummingbirds nest in the “V” of a tree branch, so we have attached this shape to the nesting platform and placed it in the wind-protected back of the habitat.
Hang habitat close to your home in a cool, dry place near feeders until the female gets familiarized with it.
Then move to a distance of at least 3 feet from feeders.
Place in a low-wind area high off the ground to deter predators.
Hummingbirds eat bugs for protein and drink nectar for energy.
Change and clean feeders every other day in 60 degree+ weather.
